I am the new Youth Mentoring and Development Chairwoman for the Memphis Urban League YP. I would love to meet with someone from this blog to discuss initiatives and possible connections that we could make. Please email me at [email protected]
I read Jon’s letter today to the Commercial Appeal. I agree with you 100 %. I am a retired Geometry teacher. I always felt that we had to reteach topics that were taught in previous grades, and we had too many topics to cover. Taking the main topics of Geometry, such as the basic postulates, Parallel , Perpendicular lines , Congruency, Similarity, Area, Perimeter of Polygons, Circles, and others, and spending more time in discovery, teaching, and projects of these topics will help students, remember and use Geometry in the real world. I have had a number of former students who say they use some of the ideas they learned in Geometry in their daily lives , or even in jobs, such as construction work. There is a reason that carpenters use the 3 4 5 triangle to get the corners in line. I leave with this. I enjoyed your article and keep up the good work. I am also leaving a website that might help you find some more projects and lessons that use the method you are using in your classroom. Maybe you are aware of it, but i am supplying the link just in case, so you and your fellow teachers can look it over, and see if it can help in each teachers classroom. I have met the owner years ago Chris Shore and he has good ideas. and a lot of interesting projects and ideas.http://mathprojects.com/
