Brief interview with Commissioner Huffman and a reporter at Chalkbeat where he equates licensure renewal of teacher licenses not tied to TVAAS data as a “rubber stamp.”
I personally believe that TVAAS doesn’t constitute the only possible metric of teacher performance as we have an evaluation system with multiple evaluation measures that could be used. Additionally, in tying licensure renewal to TVAAS scores AND our state evaluation system we’re actually double counting student data. Why not just use the composite evaluation score? If its good enough to evaluate teachers at the district level, shouldn’t it also be good enough for licensure at the state level? It already includes multiple measures of teacher effectiveness that the state agrees represents good teaching. I’d love for commissioner Huffman to justify why he believes we need to use both.
